The newborn calf is usually various shades of russet but may also be black. Within a few weeks the young one loses its hair and the new hair that grows is lighter. The change to grey/white may take as long as seven years although more commonly it happens within four.

As the birthing time for the Camargue horse is in the spring there is a large number of young foals during this period and they often frolic and play with each other under the watchful eye of the mothers.
