Lying southeast of Isabella, Floreana is a smaller and perhaps the oldest of islands in the group. It is inhabited but has a population of only 130, yet sports a small elementary school. The island is beautiful with a sea-lion colony and a tortoise corral where the animals imported from other islands are studied before being released into the wild. The original native tortoise species on this island was wiped out by the pirates who used Floreana as their base in the Galapagos since there was a fresh water source available here. The island was also home to some prominent German immigrants in the 1930s of which the Wittmer family's descendants still run a restaurant here. The self-styled 'Baroness' von Wagner Bosquet also lived here and there are many curious tales attributed to her.
