The men who ride these magnificent animals are called Gardians and are the equivalent of cowboys in the American west. They herd the black Camargue bulls and the Camargue horses. These riders are expert horsemen and in the days of old before fences became the norm on the delta they would spend several days on horseback, ensuring the herds did not mix. They are still responsible for the welfare of the animals that are entrusted to their care by the breeder who is the true owner of the horses.
