The city of Banaras (I prefer the old name), also known as Varanasi or Kashi in South India is one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world and maybe the oldest in India. It is the holiest place on earth for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. The city is also home to a large number of ancient temples of great renown. Situated on the banks of the holy river Ganges, it is a site for pilgrimage from all over the world.
