The Temple City of Angkor Thom (Great City) is home to the famous temple of Bayon, with the towers that resemble faces. The complex is spread out over a 9 sq km area. It was built in the 12th century by the Khmer king Jayavarman VII and some believe that the faces on the towers are a representation of the king himself. It is uncertain how many towers there were at Bayon, possibly 49, though only 37 now remain now, with a total of approximately 200 faces adorning them.
